Drive yourself and meet them or take a taxi. You don't want to rely on them for a ride home if things go badly. This also keeps your address discreet since they are not driving you home.
Have a plan-B
Make sure you have planned ahead of time, how you are getting home if your friends or date suddenly disappear. Make a plan with you friends to all text each other with any sudden change of plans or locations.
Don't give out your personal info
Do not use your personal contact information on any dating or social networking site. Let them contact you through the dating site. If you do decide to give out your email address, use an email that is created just for dating so you can cancel the account if things go bad.
Carry protection
You might want to carry a whistle, can of mace or pepper spray just in case things get a little rough and you need assistance.
Try to be honest and upfront
No one likes to be lied to. You want them to like you for who you are. But getting caught telling lies can sometimes anger others and that could spoil the whole date.
Meet in a public place
Meet in a public place full of people the first few dates until you feel comfortable with the person.
Make sure others know your plans
Make sure you let your friends and family know where you are going and when your date should be over so they can check up on you. As you go places on the date, make sure to text or notify others where you go so they know your where abouts.

Guard your money
There are a lot of scammers out there that have no intention of dating you. They immediately ask you to go to a private email or chat where they solicate money from you. Simply 'block' the member, it's not worth it.
